Local Coffee Growers Score Silver at the Sydney Royal

Results for the 2011 Sydney Royal Fine Food Show Coffee Competition were announced last week with coffee producers from the Northern Rivers gaining three awards for their coffee. The coffee competition attracts nearly 300 entries of some of the world’s best coffees and is one of Australia’s most prestigious coffee judging events.

It is the second year running that Greg and Janice Jansen of “Hills of Byron” from Dunoon have won a silver medal in the competition. Referred to as “Captain Silver” by fellow growers after last year’s award, Greg is doubly delighted with this year’s wins, gaining two silver medals for their espresso and plunger style coffees. He is particularly pleased to win a medal for the first time for their espresso coffee which has taken Greg several years of experimentation in the paddock, during processing and in roasting to create.

First time entrants in the Sydney Royal, Jos and Wendy Webber, were thrilled to be awarded a silver medal, also in the Plunger – Single Origin’ class for their “Kahawa Estate” Lava roast.
